When you take Ortho Tri-Cyclen, your periods may be more regular and more predictable. Your periods may also become lighter and possibly even shorter.
Ortho Tri-Cyclen is a low-hormone birth control pill. It is also a triphasic pill, which means that it delivers a different level of progestin each week.
Ortho Tri-Cyclen delivers a low level of hormones to inhibit ovulation (the release of an egg from an ovary). If ovulation does not occur, your egg is not released, and you can't get pregnant.

Recommendations
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. Take Ortho Tri-Cyclen exactly as directed.
You should take your first pill on the first day of your period or on the first Sunday after your period begins (follow your doctor's instructions).
You may need to use back-up birth control, such as condoms or a spermicide, when you first start using Ortho Tri-Cyclen.
The 28-day birth control pack of Ortho Tri-Cyclen contains seven "reminder" pills to keep you on your regular cycle. Your period will usually begin while you are using these reminder pills. Take one pill of Ortho Tri-Cyclen every day, but not more than 24 hours apart. When the pills run out, start a new pack the following day.
Do not skip pills even if you do not have sex very often.
When you finish a pack or switch your brand of pills, start the next pack on the day after your last dark green "reminder" pill. Do not wait any days between packs.
If you need to have any type of medical tests or surgery, or if you will be on bed rest, you may need to stop using this medication for a short time, tell your doctor that you are using Ortho Tri-Cyclen.
Keep Ortho Tri-Cyclen at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.
Precautions
Before taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen, tell your doctor if:
you are allergic to any medicines;
you have a history of heart attack or stroke; or blood clots; or you have cancer;
you are pregnant or suspect that you are pregnant.
