Keflex (generic name: cephalexin / cefalexin; brand names include: Cefspor / Sporidex / Cephadex) is a semisynthetic antibiotic in a class of drugs called cephalosporins intended for oral administration.
Keflex is used to treat infections in different parts of the body caused by bacteria in adults and children six months and older.
Keflex can be used to treat infections of the:
respiratory tract (throat, tonsils, chest and lungs)
nose (sinusitis)
ears (otitis media)
skin and soft tissue
kidneys and bladder (genitourinary tract)
Keflex fights bacteria in the body. It works by interfering with the bacteria's cell wall formation. This weakens the cell wall, causing it to rupture, and kills the bacteria.
Keflex may also be used for purposes other than those listed here; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. Take Keflex exactly as directed.
Your doctor will tell you how much and how often you should take Keflex. This will depend on the type of infection. The dose varies from patient to patient.
Keflex is usually taken every 6 hours (four times a day) or every 12 hours (twice a day) for 7-10 days.
Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
It does not matter if you take this medicine before or after food. The capsules and tablets should be swallowed whole and taken with a full glass of water.
Continue to take Keflex for the full course of treatment even if you feel well. Do not stop taking Keflex without talking to your doctor in order to clear up your infection completely.
Do not miss any doses. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
Keep this medicine at room temperature, away from heat and light.
This medication is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby.
Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
Caution should be used in the elderly since they may be more sensitive to the effects of this drug.
Please contact your doctor if you experience any allergic reaction while taking Keflex.
Active ingredient: cephalexin monohydrate.

Steve Nelson, MI, St. Paul:
I recently had major surgery to remove a large benign tumor on my abdomen. I was prescribed Augmentin for ten days after surgery to control infection as the incision was quite large, stretching from hipbone to hipbone. My doctor did not know that Augmentin always gave me an intense yeast infection within two days of my taking it. I didn't realize until I had left the hospital that the prescription was for Augmentin as it was prescribed under another commercial name. Instead of changing the prescription to possibly a less effective antibiotic, I decided to try taking Keflex at the rate of two capsules per day. Not only did I not get yeast right away, I was able to finish the prescription without any flareup at all...a full ten days worth. I felt great the whole time! I am sold on Keflex and will always have it in my cupboard anytime I may have to take antibiotics.

Mary Razorfield, MI:
I took Keflex when my tooth abcessed suddenly and my dentist had to place me on antibiotics. I had a history to leaky gut problems and citrobacter overgrowth that I had just spent two years trying to clear up. Even though I had to take three separate rounds of antibiotics, Keflex prevented a relapse and I managed to finish my dental repair without any more digestive problems returning. Thanks again for supplying me with Keflex.

Keflex is one of the most powerful antibiotics available. I had to use it several times myself and the relief always came very quickly.
