Augmentin (generic name: Co-amoxiclav; brand names include: CLAMP / Exclav / Cavumox / Clavamel) is a combination antibiotic. It combines amoxicillin and clavulanate in a unique formulation.
Augmentin is a penicillin antibiotic with a notably broad spectrum of activity. The bi-layer tablets provide an immediate release of amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium and an extended release of amoxicillin. If you miss a dose of the medicine, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
Keep this medicine in the original container, with the lid tightly closed. Store this medicine at room temperature, away from heat and light.
Do not take this medicine if you have had a severe allergic reaction to a penicillin antibiotic or a cephalosporin antibiotic.
Caution is advised when using this medicine in the elderly because they may be more sensitive to the effects of the drug.
For women taking birth control pills, this medicine may decrease the effectiveness of your birth control pill. To prevent pregnancy, use an additional form of birth control.
